Thirty years and $2 million later, it's hard to put down on paper the immeasurable impact the Governor's Charity Steer Show at the Iowa State Fair has had on the three Ronald McDonald Houses located throughout Iowa. Each night, fifty families seeking medical care for their sick children across the state of Iowa have a place to stay.
The amazing support of many individuals, groups, businesses and organizations helped the 3 Iowa RMHC's support its cornerstone program, the Ronald McDonald House, located in Des Moines, Iowa City and Sioux City.
Aaron Burdorf, the Ronald McDonald House Charities Celebrity for this year's Steer Show said, "After spending the first 70 days of our son Blake's life in Iowa City and having the option of staying at the Ronald McDonald House, we feel indebted to the RMH Charities and to give back as much as we can. Our involvement with the Governor's Charity Steer Show was an amazing experience for ourselves as well as our steer owner and his family.
"Knowing that the RMH will be there for other families, as a resource and a place of comfort, in the future is now, more than ever, very important to our family. We look forward to continuing support of the RMH Charities and know that with future health related things for our son, we will use the RMH again. Helping in any way we can warms our hearts knowing that other families can use this 'home away from home' in the future."
Over the past 30 years, supporters have made sure Iowa's Ronald McDonald Houses were ready for families like the Burdorf's when they needed it. And, as Aaron alludes to, it's not just a room that sponsors have provided, it's a "home away from home" with the lights on waiting to welcome its next guest.
